When Veronica sees cables or extensions outside work, she considers what people assume. They’d assume those little attached labels must have been placed there by a machine. But no, she says, Somebody actually put it there.”

Veronica is a second-chance employee at Multi-Tek. As are many of our team members. They come to us after facing — and surviving — legal and other challenges that have locked them out of most employment opportunities.

We build custom cable that’s reliable and robust. It’s cable that perseveres. And it’s no coincidence that the people who build it are just as resilient.

The flawless quality of their work speaks for itself. But hear Veronica’s story and you’ll understand why they’re driven to perform.

“When I started here, I was scared.”

Now in her 50s, Veronica describes herself as being “in trouble” since she was 19 years old. That trouble led her from Hermiston, Oregon to Portland, where she awaited a 6-month prison term.

She took on a temporary placement at Multi-Tek and was introduced to cable assembly prep. It intellectually engaged her; it boosted her confidence.

The job was an anchor to rebuild her entire life. But she was doing it with apprehension about her impending sentence. MTI had invested a lot of training into her, and she worried that her sentence would prevent a future with the company. She was terrified that her past would destroy her new foundation.

Veronica shared her anxieties with management. And they told her she didn’t have to worry. They would find a way through.

And they did. Multi-Tek kept Veronica’s job for her during her prison term and welcomed her back with a permanent position.

Fast-forward to today

Through hard work, Veronica earned her IPC certification. She now thrives as Lead over the entire Wire Prep, Stripping, Ribbon and Tinning Department, making her an integral part of Multi-Tek’s commitment to quality. She keeps the floor busy: Under Veronica’s watch, everyone has a job to do, and under her guidance, they know how to do it.

“I learned by doing things and making errors, and now, I’m not scared anymore, and I’m confident in what I do and who I am.”

Too many times to count, a checkered past kept Veronica from even being able to obtain a job, let alone being promoted within one. But Multi-Tek’s investment in her showed Veronica that she had worth and value — something that, she confesses, she didn’t even believe about herself at the time.

Which gives her a reason to share her experience: “The more people know about my story, the more people will see that people change when given a second chance.”
